"Below, I share three things I no longer do in my coaching of Horizontal Jumpers that have helped me take athlete development to new levels." - Boo Schexnayder

The first is a willingness to give up volume

As I suspect many other coaches also experienced, I sometimes was afraid to extract things from the program because I was unsure of the role they played. Now, I consider my training leaner and more purposeful, understanding that things that had a preparatory purpose no longer need be included once this preparation is complete.

The second is not working in midrange intensity zones inseason

My inseason training now is strictly polarized, meaning everything is of a high enough intensity to help, or is easy to recover from … no in-betweens. Hard or easy, no middle zones, why do something not intense enough to help that still produces fatigue? This hold true with sprint training, weight room, technical training, everything.

The third is a return to an emphasis on more bilateral work in the weight room

Bilateral work gets bashed because it isn’t necessarily specific in a sport that is predominately single legged, but the simplicity of bilateral work enables higher loads and velocities to be accomplished. The balance and control required in single leg work is important, but it does limit the load achieved or the explosiveness of the movements. I still do single leg work of course, but my key loading days are bilateral.
