COURSE AIMS

This 7-day course will equip you with a comprehensive understanding of the principles of sprint biomechanics.

By delving into the key components of sprinting, such as kinetics and kinematics, ground contact time, flight time, stride length, and stride frequency, this Course will enable you to apply your newly acquired knowledge to enhance the speed and performance of both Track & Field, and Team Sport athletes.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Your course objectives will provide you with the understanding to apply biomechanics in your training, emphasizing the real-world application and its relevance to different sports.

  • Understand the Fundamentals of Biomechanics: You'll grasp the basic concepts, terminology, and significance of biomechanics in sprinting, including Newton's Laws of Motion.
  • Explore Kinetics and Kinematics: You'll develop confidence to define and differentiate between kinetics (forces causing movement) and kinematics (description of movement) and recognize their role in sprinting.
  • Analyze Stride Length and Frequency: You'll learn to identify the importance of stride length and stride frequency in determining sprint velocity and learn strategies to balance them effectively.
  • Evaluate Ground Contact Time and Flight Time: You'll develop the ability to investigate the relationship between ground contact time (GCT) and flight time (FT) in sprinting and learn how to manipulate these variables in training.
  • Apply Biomechanics to Training: You'll learn to integrate biomechanical principles into training regimens to enhance force generation and power, and ultimately, improve sprint performance.
  • Engage with Real-world Examples: You'll examine real-world case studies and examples that illustrate the application of biomechanical principles in various sports where speed is essential.
  • Reflect on Personal Practice: You'll be encouraged to reflect on your current coaching practices and explore opportunities for implementing biomechanics insights into your own coaching philosophy and methods.

WHAT YOU'LL GET

Day 1: Force and Newton's Laws

This lesson is an introduction to the fundamental concept of 'force' in sprint mechanics and how Newton's laws apply in a sporting context. As a coach, understanding these principles can elevate your ability to analyze and improve the performance of your athletes.

Day 2: Sprinting, Kinetics, Kinematics, and Practical Applications in Team Sports

This lesson delves into the crucial elements of sprinting - kinetics and kinematics. Kinetics, the application of force, and kinematics, the stride patterns, form the pillars of understanding speed in athletes across various team sports.

Day 3: Stride Length & Frequency

This lesson explores step length and step frequency, key components that determine sprint speed. We highlight the importance of optimizing the balance between these factors for enhanced performance.

Day 4: Force Production, Rate of Force Development, and Force Direction

In this lesson, we discuss Ground Contact Time [GCT] and Flight Time [FT], crucial elements of sprinting biomechanics. The balance between GCT and FT determines sprint effectiveness, and mismanaging either can compromise an athlete's speed.

Day 5: Force Production, Rate of Force Development, and Force Direction

This lesson is an in-depth look at force production, rate of force development, and force orientation. A good understanding of these aspects can aid a coach in fine-tuning an athlete's sprinting mechanics for enhanced performance.

Day 6: Pulling it all Together

This lesson brings together the concepts discussed over the week. It highlights the importance of understanding these different aspects as a cohesive whole, enabling a coach to formulate more effective training strategies.

Day 7: Introduction to Motion-IQ

The final lesson introduces Motion-IQ, a product that can measure key sprint mechanics variables. It's a technology designed to enhance a coach's understanding of how an athlete generates speed, ultimately helping them to be more effective in their role.
