Following a run of strong performances ALTIS athletes are once again seeking to impress this week. The competitive action kicks off today in Stockholm, and concludes on Sunday in Canada.
Thursday 16th June – Stockholm Diamond League
Held at the historical Stockholm Olympic Stadium, the Stockholm leg of the IAAF Diamond League is a leading Track & Field meeting and the largest annual sporting event in Sweden. 83 world records have been set there since 1912 – far more than at any other arena in the world.
Queen Harrison will be set to capitalize on the event, as she goes in the 100 Hurdles.
Meet information here.
Friday 17th June – Harry Jerome Invitational – Vancouver, BC
The inaugural Achilles meet (now called the Vancouver Sun Harry Jerome International Track Classic), the preview to the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, was held at Vancouver’s Empire Stadium shortly before competitors were to leave for the Games in Japan. The idea was popular, the event compelling, but Mother Nature proved not to be a track and field fan and served up a cold, soggy, September day that kept many fans away.
Since then world and Olympic champions, world record holders, Canadian stars and young hopefuls have thrilled spectators, achieved personal bests and, thanks to the vision and dedication of the Achilles International Track and Field Society, continued in their quest to become Faster, Higher and Stronger. This year sees nine ALTIS sprinters go to their marks on Friday night: Andre De Grasse, Dontae Richards-Kwok, Shai-Anne Davis, Tremaine Harris, Bridgette Owens, Jeremy Dodson, Mahagony Jones, Bridgette Owens and Akeem Haynes.
German Nationals – Kassel (17th & 18th June)
Matthias Bühler will be seeking to book his place on the plane to Rio, as he starts in the 110 Hurdles.
Saturday 18th June
Olympic Training Center High Performance Invite – Chula Vista, CA
Laura Bobek, Anna Jelmini, Rachel Longfors contest the Womens Discus, whilst the ALTIS Pole Vaulters will be looking to build upon what have been some strong performances in previous weeks. In the sprints, Dominique Booker and Marvellous Iheukwumere are set to go head to head in the 200m.
Boston Grand Prix
Jamaican sprint star Schillonie Calvert goes in the 100m on an elevated straight track specially constructed between the Boston Common and Public Garden.
All the details here.
Sunday 19th June
Victoria Track Classic – Centennial Stadium, University of Victoria, Canada
The Victoria International Track Classic is held annually and is an internationally recognized athletics event that provides an opportunity for Canada’s elite athletes to compete against the best in the world, on their home turf. It is the last stop on the National Track League series and over $300,000 in prizes is up for grabs for the athletes in competition. This year sees eight ALTIS sprinters and hurdlers compete, all of whom will be seeking to impress in the lead up to nationals:
Andre De Grasse, Dontae Richards-Kwok, Shai-Anne Davis, Tremaine Harris, Bridgette Owens, Jeremy Dodson, Mahagony Jones and Bridgette Owens.
